West of Yizhou and east of Yunnan stands a shrine, its chamber hewn from the mountain rock. A spirit dwells beneath it and is worshipped there, calling himself Lord Huang. It is said that this is the spirit of Lord Huangshi, from whom Zhang Liang received instruction. Purity is observed there, and no animals are slaughtered. Those who come to pray bring a hundred coins, a pair of writing brushes, and a cake of ink, placing them in the stone chamber before making their petitions. First they hear a sound from within; a moment later, a voice asks, “What does the visitor seek?” Once they have spoken, the spirit tells them fully what good or ill fortune awaits, though its form is never seen. This continues to the present day.
