Earlier, Lady Gouyi had incurred the emperor’s displeasure and been put to death. After she was laid in her coffin, her body gave off no stench; instead, a fragrance spread for more than ten li. She was buried at Yunling, and the emperor mourned her deeply. Suspecting that she was no ordinary mortal, he had her tomb opened and the coffin inspected. It was empty, with no body inside; only a pair of slippers remained. According to another account, when Emperor Zhao ascended the throne, he had her reburied. Her coffin was empty, and only her silken slippers remained.
