A man loaded a goat, a sheep, and a pig onto a donkey and drove it toward town. The pig squealed all the way, and a fox, hearing him, asked why he alone cried out while the others rode along quietly. The pig replied, “I have good reason to lament. I know full well that the master will spare the sheep, since it supplies him with wool and lambs. He will spare the goat as well, for its cheese and kids. But since he has no other use for me, he is sure to slaughter me.” So too, people who foresee the misfortunes awaiting them should not be blamed for lamenting.

Ὄνῳ τις ἐπιθεὶς αἶγα καὶ πρόβατον καὶ δέλφακα, ἤλαυνεν εἰς ἄστυ. Τοῦ δὲ δέλφακος παρʼ ὅλην τὴν ὁδὸν κεκραγότος, ἀλώπηξ ἀκούσασα ἐπυνθάνετο αὐτοῦ τὴν αἰτίαν, διʼ ἣν, τῶν λοιπῶν μεθʼ ἡσυχίας φερομένων, μόνος αὐτὸς βοᾷ. Ὁ δὲ ὑποτυχών ἔφη· ,,ἀλλʼ ἔγωγε οὐ μάτην ὀδύρομαι· εὖ γὰρ οἶδα, ὅτι τοῦ μὲν προβάτου ἔριά τε καὶ ἄρνας παρεχομένου ὁ δεσπότης ἀφέξεται· ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ τῆς αἰγὸς διὰ τοὺς τυροὺς καὶ τούς ἐρίφους· ἐμοὶ δὲ οὐκ ἔχων εἰς ἄλλο τι χρήσασθαι, πάντως με θύσει.“
Οὕτω καὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων οὐ μεμπτέοι εἰσὶν, ὅσοι τὰς μελλούσας προορώμενοι συμφορὰς ἀποκλαίονται.
