Some men boarded a boat and set sail. When they were out on the open sea, a violent storm arose, and the vessel came close to sinking. One of the passengers tore his clothes and called upon the gods of his fathers with cries and groans, promising offerings of thanksgiving if they were brought safely through. When the storm had passed and the sea was calm again, they turned to feasting, dancing and leaping for joy at their unexpected escape from danger. But the helmsman, a levelheaded man, said to them, “My friends, we should rejoice in such a way as to remember that another storm may yet come.” The fable teaches us not to be too elated by good fortune, but to bear in mind how swiftly fortune can change.
