Some travelers walking along the seashore came to a lookout point. From there they saw brushwood floating in the distance and took it for a large ship, so they waited, expecting it to come ashore. But as the wind carried the brushwood nearer, they thought they saw not a ship but a small boat. When it washed ashore and they saw that it was only brushwood, they said to one another, “How foolishly we have waited for what turned out to be nothing!” The fable shows that some people who seem formidable at first sight prove worthless when put to the test.
