A shepherd tending his flock by the shore saw how calm the sea was and longed to set sail as a merchant. So he sold his sheep, bought a cargo of dates, and put out to sea. But a violent storm arose, and with his ship in danger of sinking, he threw his entire cargo overboard and barely made it to safety in the empty vessel. Many days later, a passerby was admiring the stillness of the sea, which happened to be calm again. The shepherd spoke up: “She wants more dates, it seems, and that is why she looks so peaceful.” The fable shows that people learn from their misfortunes.
