At the end of the Han dynasty, Shi Man, prefect of Lingyang, had a daughter who fell in love with a clerk in his service. She secretly sent her maid to fetch the water left over from the clerk’s washing of his hands and drank it; in time, she became pregnant. She gave birth to a son, and when he was old enough to walk, the prefect ordered him to be brought out and told him to find his father. The child crawled straight into the clerk’s arms. The clerk pushed him away, and he fell to the ground and turned into water. The prefect inquired closely into the matter, learned the whole story, and gave his daughter to the clerk in marriage.
