Lady Feng, an honored consort of Emperor Huan of Han, died of illness. During Emperor Ling’s reign, grave robbers broke into her tomb. Though more than seventy years had passed, her complexion was unchanged, and her flesh was only slightly cold. The robbers all violated her corpse, then fought over her and killed one another, whereupon the affair came to light. Later, after Empress Dowager Dou’s family had been executed, it was proposed that Lady Feng should share in the sacrificial offerings to the late emperor. Chen Gongda of Xiapi argued that although she had enjoyed the late emperor’s favor, her body had been defiled, and she was therefore unfit to share the honors accorded to the sovereign. Empress Dowager Dou was consequently chosen instead.
