An ass in the service of a gardener, who gave him little to eat and worked him hard, prayed to Zeus to deliver him from the gardener and place him in another master’s hands. Zeus sent Hermes with orders to sell him to a potter. But the ass was unhappy again, for he was forced to carry far heavier loads, and once more he called upon Zeus. At last Zeus arranged for him to be sold to a tanner. When the ass saw what his new master did, he said, “I would rather have gone hungry carrying loads for my former masters than have come here, where I shall not even be buried when I die.” The fable shows that servants long most keenly for their former masters when they have had a taste of others.
