The mother of Zhang Shao, Commander of the Guard, was gravely ill. Zhi cast the divining stalks for her and told Zhang Shao to go west, buy a macaque, and tether it to his mother’s arm. He was to have those attending her strike and slap the monkey to keep it crying out, then release it after three days. Zhang Shao did as instructed. As soon as the monkey went out through the gate, a dog bit it to death, and his mother recovered.
