Zhang Kuan of Shu Commandery, whose courtesy name was Shuwen, served as a palace attendant during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han. Once, while accompanying the emperor to offer sacrifices at Ganquan, he came to the Wei Bridge, where a woman was bathing in the Wei River, her breasts seven chi long. Astonished by this strange sight, the emperor sent someone to question her. The woman said, “The man in the seventh carriage behind the emperor knows who I am.” On the journey there, Zhang Kuan had been riding in the seventh carriage. When questioned, he replied, “She is a heavenly star. When those presiding over the sacrifices fail to observe the proper purity in their fasting and abstinence, she appears in the form of a woman.”
