When he had done so, a voice rose from amid the waves, reciting the closing lines: “With a distracted mind they chant the Lotus Sutra, without entering meditative absorption.” Filled with wonder, he asked, “Who is there?” The voice named itself as Gubō Sōzu Jitsuin. Sitting at the water’s edge, he discussed the teachings with him, but some of the answers he received were mistaken. “That is incorrect. How can this be?” he asked. “I believe I am answering correctly,” came the reply, “but having passed into another life, there are things beyond my power. Only because I am who I am can I say even this much”—or so the story goes.
