Once, when Seimei was visiting the residence of the High Priest of Hirosawa and conversing with him, some young monks asked, “They say you command shikigami spirits. Can you kill a person in an instant?” “Not so easily,” he replied. “But if I put my strength into it, I could. As for insects and such, the slightest effort would surely kill them. Yet I do not know how to bring them back to life, so I would incur the sin of killing. There is no good reason to do such things.” Just then, a frog appeared in the garden and hopped five or six times toward the pond. “Then kill that one, and let us see,” said one of the monks. “What a monk you are, asking me to commit a sin!” Seimei said. “Still, since you wish to put me to the test, I shall show you.” He plucked a blade of grass, murmured what seemed to be an incantation, and tossed it toward the frog. When the blade of grass touched the frog, it was crushed flat and died. At the sight, the monks turned pale with fear. Perhaps Seimei employed these shikigami when there was no one else in his house, for the shutters would be raised and lowered and the gate barred, though no one was there.
