Sun Ce intended to cross the Yangtze and launch a surprise attack on Xu, and Yu Ji accompanied him. A severe drought prevailed, and everywhere the heat was fierce. Sun Ce urged his officers and men to hurry and bring the boats forward, even going out early himself to press them on. Seeing that many of his officers were gathered around Yu Ji, he flew into a rage. “Am I not his equal,” he said, “that they should flock to him first?” He had Yu Ji arrested and brought before him, then demanded angrily, “There is drought and no rain. Our passage is difficult, and we cannot get through in good time. That is why I have been out since early morning. Yet instead of sharing my concerns, you sit at ease in your boat, playing at spirits and disrupting my ranks. Now I shall be rid of you.” He ordered Yu Ji bound and laid on the ground in the blazing sun, and told him to pray for rain. If he could move Heaven to send rain by noon, he would be pardoned; otherwise, he would be put to death. Before long, clouds began to rise, small wisps gathering into a mass. By noon, a great rain poured down, filling the streams and ravines to overflowing. The officers and men rejoiced, certain that Yu Ji would be spared, and went together to congratulate and comfort him. Sun Ce killed him nonetheless. Grieving for him, the officers and men hid his body. That night, clouds suddenly gathered again and covered it. When they went to look the next morning, it was nowhere to be found. After killing Yu Ji, Sun Ce would seem to see him at his side whenever he sat alone. Deeply troubled by these visions, he began to behave strangely. Later, when a wound he was having treated had just begun to heal, he took up a mirror to look at himself and saw Yu Ji reflected in it. He turned, but there was no one there. This happened several times. He dashed the mirror down and cried out; all his wounds burst open, and within moments he was dead. (Yu Ji was a Daoist priest from Langya.)
