There were many mice in a certain house. A cat, learning of this, came there and began catching and eating them one by one. As their numbers steadily dwindled, the mice retreated into their holes. Unable to reach them any longer, the cat decided he must lure them out by a trick. So he climbed onto a peg and hung himself from it, pretending to be dead. But one of the mice peeped out, saw him, and said, “Listen, you! Even if you turn into a sack, we won’t come near you.” The fable shows that sensible people, once they have experienced someone’s wickedness, are no longer deceived by that person’s pretences.
