In the region of the Yangtze and Han rivers live the “Chu people,” descendants of Lord Lin, who can transform themselves into tigers. Once, the inhabitants of Donggao in Man County, under the jurisdiction of Changsha, built a cage trap to catch a tiger. The trap was sprung, and the next day they went together to kill the beast. Instead, they found a village constable sitting inside, wearing a red headcloth and a tall cap. They asked him, “How did you come to be in here?” The constable replied angrily, “Yesterday I was suddenly summoned by the county authorities. During the night I took shelter from the rain and stumbled into this thing by mistake. Let me out at once!” They said, “If you were summoned, surely you must have a written summons?” He promptly drew one from inside his robe, and they released him. Watching him a little longer, they saw him turn into a tiger and run up the mountain. Some say, “A chu is a tiger transformed into a human. It looks as though it is wearing clothes of purple kudzu cloth, and its feet have no heels. Any tiger with five toes is a chu.”
