Long ago, at a house where someone was suffering from spirit possession, an exorcism was being performed to draw the spirit into a medium. Once it had entered her, it said, “I am no spirit bent on bringing a curse. I am only a fox who happened to be wandering past. I have children in a den in a burial mound, and they were hungry. I thought there would be food scattered about at a place like this, so I came along. Give me some rice-flour cakes to eat, and I shall be on my way.” They had some cakes made and gave the medium a trayful. She ate a little, saying, “Oh, how delicious! Oh, how delicious!” Everyone grumbled that the woman had only pretended to be possessed because she wanted the cakes. Then she said, “Give me some paper. I shall wrap these up and take them home for my wife and children to eat.” They laid two sheets of paper across one another and wrapped the cakes in them. When she tucked the bulky parcel into her sash, it stuck up as far as her chest. “Now drive me out, and I shall be gone,” she told the exorcist. “Begone! Begone!” he cried. At that, she rose to her feet, then fell flat on the floor. She lay there a little while, then got up—and there was nothing at all inside the bosom of her robe. The parcel had vanished. How strange it was!
