A lion was chasing a deer. She escaped him and took refuge deep in a thicket. The lion stopped at the edge of the thicket and asked a shepherd whether he had seen where the deer had hidden. The shepherd said he did not know, but as he spoke, he raised his hand and pointed to the spot. The lion went after the poor deer, and a fox said to the shepherd, “What a coward and a scoundrel you are—a coward before lions, and a scoundrel toward deer!”
