In the days of the Retired Emperor Go-Toba, a shining thing as large as a paper umbrella would come flying down from the mountains night after night and enter the temple hall at his Minase residence. The men stationed on the western and northern sides each kept a careful watch, hoping to win renown by discovering what it was, but night after night their efforts came to nothing. Then one night Kagekata lay alone in wait on the island in the pond. When the familiar shining thing came flying from the mountains across the water, he feared that rising would give it time to escape, so, still lying on his back, he drew his bow to the full and let fly. He felt the arrow strike, and something fell into the pond. He then called the others, and they lit torches and went to look. What they found was an enormous flying squirrel, old and tough-looking, with its fur worn away in patches.
