This, too, happened long ago. In the kingdom of Silla there lived a queen who secretly took a lover. When the king learned of this, he had her seized and suspended by a rope tied to her hair, leaving her feet two or three feet above the ground. Helpless, she thought to herself, “Though I suffer this terrible torment, there is no one to save me. Yet I have heard that east of this land lies a country called Japan, where a Buddha known as the Kannon of Hase has appeared. Word of this bodhisattva’s boundless compassion has reached even our country. If I place my trust in him, surely he will save me.” She closed her eyes and prayed with all her heart, and a golden stool appeared beneath her feet. Standing upon it, she felt no pain at all, though those who looked on could not see the stool. Some days later she was pardoned. Afterward, she sent a messenger to Hasedera with many of her treasures as offerings. Among them were a great bronze mirror and a metal blind, which are said to remain there to this day. Thus it is said that no one who prays to this Kannon, even in a foreign land, fails to receive a sign of his grace.
