As long as the war lasted, a soldier fed his horse on barley, for he was his companion in times of need. But when the war ended, the horse was put to menial work and made to carry heavy loads, with nothing but straw to eat. When war was declared again and the trumpet sounded, his master bridled the horse, put on his armor, and mounted. But the horse kept stumbling and falling, for he had no strength left. He said to his master, “You had better go with the foot soldiers now. You have turned me from a horse into a donkey; how can you expect to turn me from a donkey back into a horse?”
