A farmer was trapped on his farm by a winter storm. Unable to go out and find food for himself, he first ate his sheep. When the storm persisted, he feasted on his goats as well. Then, as there was still no letup, he turned to his plow oxen. Seeing what was happening, the dogs said to one another, “We must get away from here. If our master did not spare even the oxen that work alongside him, how will he spare us?” The story shows that we must be especially wary of those who do not shrink from harming even their own household.
