A snake crept up to a farmer’s son and killed him. Grief-stricken, the farmer took up an axe and went to the snake’s hole, where he stood watching, ready to strike the moment it came out. When the snake peered out, he swung his axe, but missed it and split the rock beside it instead. Later, fearing the snake, he begged it to make peace with him. But the snake replied, “I can never bear you goodwill while I look at that scarred rock, nor can you bear me goodwill while you look at your son’s grave.” The fable shows that deep enmities are not easily reconciled.
