A farmer set traps in a field. He caught the cranes that were destroying his seed, and with them he caught a stork. Limping, the stork begged to be released, saying, “I am not a crane. I am a stork, a most dutiful creature: I honor my father and serve him. Look at my plumage, too—how different it is!” But the farmer replied, “I do not know what you are talking about. I caught you with them, and with them I will put you to death.” It is wise to shun wicked people and keep no company with them, lest you share in their perils.
