Once upon a time, a lion, Kititi, and a hyena agreed to go and cultivate some land. They went to the fields, tilled the soil, and planted their crops. Then they returned home and stayed there.
When the time came for the crops to ripen, they said, “Let us go to the fields and see how our crops are doing.” Now their fields were very far away. Kititi told his companions, “When we go to the fields, let none of us stop along the way. Whoever stops shall be eaten.” His companions agreed.
So they set off, and as they went along the road, Kititi stopped. His companions said, “Kititi has stopped. Let him be eaten.” Kititi said, “But I am thinking!” His companions asked him, “What are you thinking about?” He said, “I am thinking about those two stones, one large and one small: the small one never goes up, and the large one never goes down.” His companions said, “That is true.”
They went on again, and a little farther along, Kititi stopped once more. His companions said, “Kititi has stopped. Let him be eaten.” Kititi said, “But I am thinking!” His companions asked him, “What are you thinking about?” He said, “I am thinking about how, when people put on new clothes, where do the old clothes go?” His companions said, “That is true.” They went on again, and a little farther along, the hyena stopped too. His companions said, “Hyena has stopped. Let him be eaten.” The hyena said, “But I am thinking!” His companions asked him, “What are you thinking about?” He said, “I am not thinking about anything at all.” So his companions seized the hyena and ate him. The lion and Kititi were left, and they went on again. Farther along, they came upon a cave. Kititi stopped. The lion said, “Kititi has stopped. Let him be eaten.” Kititi said, “But I am thinking!” The lion asked him, “What are you thinking about?” He said, “I am thinking about that cave. Long ago, our elders used to go in at this end and come out at the other. I shall go and try to enter at this end and come out at the other.” He went in at one end and came out at the other, over and over again.
Then he said to the lion, “Elder Lion, you too should go and try entering at this end and coming out at the other.” The lion went into the cave and became wedged fast, unable to go forward or backward. Kititi went up to the lion’s hindquarters and ate his flesh. When he had finished eating, the lion said to him, “Brother, eat me at the front.” Kititi said, “I cannot come and eat you at the front. I would be ashamed to meet your eyes.”
Kititi went away, leaving the lion where he was, and took their fields for himself.
