Long ago, in Bianzhou in China, there lived a man whose household was poor and possessed no treasure. He had no means of supporting his wife and children, and though he sought wealth, he found none. Years passed in this way. Troubled by his plight, he went to a monk and asked how he might obtain wealth. The monk, who was wise, replied, “If you wish to gain wealth, you need only awaken a sincere heart. Then you will have riches in abundance, and in the life to come you will be born in a good place.” The man asked, “What is a sincere heart?” The monk said, “To awaken a sincere heart is nothing other than to believe in the Buddha’s teaching.” The man asked again, “What does that mean? Let me hear it clearly, so that I may understand, place my trust in it, and believe without wavering. Pray, tell me.” The monk replied, “Your own mind is the Buddha. Apart from your own mind, there is no Buddha. Thus it is through your own mind that the Buddha is present.” At these words, the man rubbed his hands together and bowed in reverence, weeping. From then on he kept this teaching in his heart, pondering it day and night. Brahma, Shakra, and the other heavenly beings came to protect him, and wealth came to him unexpectedly, until his household enjoyed abundance. As his life drew to its close, he turned his thoughts ever more deeply to the Buddha within his own mind and swiftly passed into the Pure Land. All who heard or witnessed these things were filled with reverence and deeply moved.
