In the Later Han, the wife of Dou Feng, governor of Dingxiang, gave birth to a son, Wu, and also to a snake. Feng took the snake out into the wild and released it. When Wu grew up, he won renown throughout the realm for his exceptional talents. His mother died, and as preparations were being made for her burial, before the coffin had been lowered into the grave, the mourners gathered. A great snake emerged from the woodland undergrowth and came straight to the foot of the coffin. It writhed upon the ground, raising and lowering its body, and struck the coffin with its head. Blood and tears streamed down, and it seemed overcome with grief. After a while, it went away. People at the time recognized it as a portent for the Dou family.
