As Duke Jing of Qi was crossing the waters of the Yangtze and Yuan rivers, a giant turtle seized the leftmost horse of his team in its jaws and dragged it under. Everyone was stricken with fear. Gu Yezi drew his sword and plunged in after it, swimming five li across the current and three li upstream until he reached the foot of Dizhu Rock. There he slew the creature—a giant turtle. Holding its head in his left hand and hauling the horse up with his right, he burst from the water, springing like a swallow and soaring like a swan. He threw back his head and gave a mighty shout toward heaven, and the waters flowed backward for three hundred paces. All who witnessed it thought him the River God.
