Along the border between Dan and Zongyang counties in Lujiang, Daqing, Xiaoqing, and Hei dwelt in the hills and wilds. From time to time, the sound of weeping could be heard, sometimes like several dozen people—men and women, young and old—mourning someone newly dead. Alarmed, the neighbors would hurry to the spot, but never find anyone there. Yet wherever the weeping was heard, a death was sure to follow.
