Jie Yan’s place of origin is unknown. He lived on Mount Fang in Jian’an, where he studied under his master Du, the Lord of the White Ram, receiving the Way of the Mysterious One and nonaction. He could change his form and make himself invisible. He often traveled to and from the Eastern Sea, and during a brief stay in Moling came to the notice of the ruler of Wu. The ruler persuaded Yan to remain and had a temple built for him, sending messengers several times a day to inquire after his well-being. Yan appeared now as a young boy, now as an old man. He ate nothing and accepted neither provisions nor gifts. The ruler wished to learn his arts, but because he indulged too freely in his palace women, Yan withheld instruction for months. Enraged, the ruler ordered Yan bound and commanded armored soldiers to shoot him with crossbows. The bolts flew, yet only the binding cords remained; no one knew where Yan had gone.
