During the Jin dynasty, a severe drought struck Wei Commandery. The farmers prayed at a dragon’s cave and received rain, and were preparing a sacrifice to give thanks. Sun Deng saw them and said, “This dragon is ill. How can its rain revive your crops? If you do not believe me, smell the water.” The water did indeed have a foul, fishy odor. At the time, the dragon had a large abscess on its back. Hearing Sun Deng’s words, it transformed itself into an old man and sought treatment from him, saying, “When I am cured, I shall repay you.” Within a few days, heavy rain did indeed fall. A great rock was then found split open, revealing a well filled with clear, still water. The dragon must have bored this well to repay him.
