Once, while traveling along a road, Hua Tuo saw a man suffering from an ailment of the throat. Though eager to eat, he could swallow nothing, and his family were taking him by cart to seek a physician. Hearing the man’s groans, Hua Tuo stopped his carriage, went over to examine him, and said, “A little way back along the road, there is a cake seller who has garlic relish in strong vinegar. Get three sheng of it and drink it, and your illness will pass of its own accord.” The man did as Hua Tuo instructed and immediately vomited up a snake.
