Zeus, having fashioned a man and a woman, ordered Hermes to lead them down to earth and show them where they could dig to enrich themselves. When Hermes carried out his orders, Earth at first refused to let them. But when he insisted, saying that Zeus had commanded it, she said, “Then let them dig as much as they please; they will give it back with groans and tears.” This fable is apt for those who borrow readily but repay with sorrow.
