This, too, is a tale of long ago. When Yasumasa, Governor of Tango, was traveling to his province, he encountered a lone, white-haired warrior on horseback in the mountains of Yosa. The man had ridden beneath a tree beside the road and halted there. The governor’s retainers said, “Why does this old fellow not dismount? Such insolence! We ought to make him get down.” But the governor restrained them. “The way he has stationed his horse marks him as a warrior worth a thousand men. He is no ordinary person. Do not challenge him.” They rode on, and after going some three chō, they met Ōya no Saemon no Jō Munetsune with a large company of warriors. As the governor exchanged greetings with him, Munetsune said, “Did you happen to meet an old man riding alone just back there? He is my father, Heigo Daibu. He is a stubborn countryman, ignorant of proper courtesies, and I fear he may have behaved rudely toward you.” After Munetsune had passed on, the governor is said to have remarked, “Just as I thought.”
