Demades the orator was once addressing the assembly in Athens. Finding that his audience was paying him little attention, he asked them to let him tell a fable of Aesop. When they urged him to do so, he began: “Demeter, a swallow, and an eel were traveling along the same road. When they came to a river, the swallow flew across and the eel dived into the water.” With that, he fell silent. “And what happened to Demeter?” they asked. He replied, “She is angry with you for neglecting the affairs of the city and clinging instead to Aesop’s fables.” So too, those who neglect what is necessary and choose pleasure instead are foolish.
