Dou Bobi lost his father at an early age and went with his mother to live in the home of his maternal uncle and aunt. When he grew up, he had a secret affair with the daughter of the Viscount of Yun, and she bore him a son, Ziwen. The viscount’s wife, ashamed that her daughter had borne a child out of wedlock, abandoned the baby in the mountains. While out hunting, the viscount saw a tigress suckling an infant. He returned home and told his wife, who said, “That is the child our daughter bore after her secret affair with Bobi. I was ashamed and had him taken into the mountains.” The viscount then brought the child home to be raised and gave his daughter to Bobi in marriage. The people of Chu therefore called Ziwen “Guwutu.” He rose to become chief minister of Chu.
