This, too, happened long ago. Beside the road in Yamashina, at a place called Shinomiya Kawara, there was a gathering place for merchants known as Sodekurabe. A man of humble station who lived nearby had an image of the bodhisattva Jizō made, but without having its eyes opened in the consecration ceremony, he put it in a chest and stored it away in a room at the back of his house. Caught up in the business of daily life, he forgot all about it, and three or four years went by. Then one night he dreamed that someone passing along the main road was calling out loudly. Wondering what was happening, he listened and heard the voice calling before his house, “Jizō! Jizō!” From the back of the house another voice answered, “What is it?” “Tomorrow the heavenly sovereign Taishaku is holding an assembly of Jizōs. Will you not attend?” The voice within the little house replied, “I should like to go, but my eyes have not yet been opened, so I cannot.” “Do make every effort to come,” said the first voice. “But if I cannot see, how am I to go?” came the answer. The man woke with a start and wondered what could have brought him such a dream. Puzzled, he waited until daybreak and then searched carefully through the back rooms. At last he remembered the image of Jizō he had stored away and brought it out. “So it was you who appeared in my dream!” he thought in astonishment, and hastened to have the eye-opening ceremony performed.
