A deer fell ill and lay down on a stretch of level ground. Some of the wild animals came to visit her and grazed away the grass beside her. Then, though she recovered from her illness, she was sorely weakened by hunger, and with her pasture she lost her life as well.

The fable shows that those who acquire needless and useless friends suffer harm from them rather than gain any benefit.
