During the reign of Sun Xiu of Wu, the garrison commander at Guangling dug into tombs to take their timber for repairs to the city walls, destroying a great many in the process. Then he opened a large tomb containing a two-storeyed chamber. Its doors all turned on pivots and could still be opened and shut. A passage ran around all four sides, wide enough for a carriage and high enough for a man on horseback. There were also several dozen cast-bronze figures, each five feet tall, wearing tall ceremonial caps and vermilion robes, holding swords, and standing in attendance. The spirit seats, too, were furnished with sculpted bronze figures. On the stone wall behind them were inscriptions such as “General of the Palace,” “Gentleman Attendant,” and “Regular Attendant.” It seemed to be the tomb of a duke or marquis. When they broke open the coffin, they found a man inside whose hair was already grizzled. His robes and cap were still bright and fresh, and his face and body looked those of a living man. Inside the coffin was a layer of mica about a foot thick, with thirty white jade discs laid beneath the corpse. The soldiers together lifted the dead man out and propped him against the tomb wall. A piece of jade, about a foot long and shaped like a winter melon, slipped from the bosom of his robes and fell to the ground. In each ear and nostril was a piece of gold about the size of a jujube.
