Wang Xiang, courtesy name Xiuzheng, was a native of Langye, deeply filial by nature. He lost his mother early in life, and his stepmother, Lady Zhu, was unkind to him. She repeatedly spoke ill of him to his father, until he lost his father’s affection. He was often made to muck out the cattle stalls. Whenever his parents fell ill, he tended them without so much as loosening his belt to rest. His stepmother once craved fresh fish. It was bitterly cold, and the waters were frozen over. Xiang took off his clothes and was about to break through the ice to find some when it suddenly split open of its own accord. Two carp leaped out, and he carried them home. Another time, his stepmother longed for roasted yellow sparrows. Dozens of yellow sparrows flew into his tent, and these too he prepared for her. The villagers marveled, believing that his filial devotion had moved Heaven to grant these wonders.
