A sorceress who promised to ward off the wrath of the gods plied a busy trade and profited from it. But some people charged her with impiety and secured her conviction, and she was led away to be put to death. Seeing her being taken away, someone said, “You who promised to turn aside the anger of the gods, how is it that you could not even change the minds of men?” The fable shows that many people make great promises when they cannot accomplish even small things.

Γυνὴ μάγος, θείων μηνιμάτων ἀποτροπιασμοὺς ἐπαγγελλομένη, πολλὰ διετέλει ποιοῦσα, καὶ κέρδος ἐντεῦθεν ἔχουσα. Γραψάμενοι δέ τινες αὐτὴν ἀσεβείας, εἷλον, καὶ καταδικασθεῖσαν ἀπῆγον εἰς θάνατον. Ἰδὼν δέ τις ἀπαγομένην αὐτὴν, ἔφη· ,,ἡ τὰς τῶν θεῶν ὀργὰς ἀποτρέπειν ἐπαγγελλομένη, πῶς οὐδὲ ἀνθρώπων βουλὴν μεταπεῖσαι ἠδυνήθης;“

Ὁ μῦθος δηλοῖ, ὅτι πολλοὶ μεγάλα ἐπαγγέλλονται, μηδὲ μικρὰ ποιῆσαι δυνάμενοι.
