A sorceress who promised to avert the wrath of the gods with her spells did a thriving trade and earned a handsome living from it. Some people brought charges against her for introducing unlawful religious practices and took her to court, where they secured her conviction and a sentence of death. Someone who saw her coming out of the court said to her, “You who promised to turn aside the anger of the gods—how is it that you could not even persuade mortal men?” This tale may be applied to a deceitful woman who promises great things but proves incapable of even modest ones.
