Zhong Yao of Yingchuan, whose courtesy name was Fuchang, once went several months without attending court, and his manner and disposition became strange. Someone asked him why. He said, “A beautiful woman often comes to me. Her beauty is beyond compare.” The questioner said, “She must be a ghost. You should kill her.” When the woman next came, she did not approach at once but remained outside the door. Zhong Yao asked, “Why do you stay there?” She said, “You mean to kill me.” Zhong Yao said, “I have no such intention.” Only after he had urged her repeatedly did she enter. His heart was troubled, and he could hardly bear to harm her, yet he struck her, wounding her thigh. The woman immediately left, wiping away the blood with fresh cotton all along the road. The next day, he sent someone to follow the trail. It led to a large tomb. Inside the coffin lay a beautiful woman, her body looking just as though she were alive. She wore a white silk blouse and a crimson embroidered liangdang vest. Her left thigh was wounded, and she had used the cotton padding from her vest to wipe away the blood.
