Zhang Fen of Wei Commandery came from an immensely wealthy family, but he suddenly grew old and infirm, his fortune dwindled, and he sold his house to Cheng Ying. After Ying moved in, his entire household fell ill, so he sold the house on to a neighbor named A Wen. Wen first went there alone, carrying a great saber, and at dusk climbed onto a beam in the north hall. At the end of the third watch, a figure more than ten feet tall, wearing a high cap and yellow robes, suddenly entered the hall and called, “Slender Waist!” Slender Waist answered. “Why is there the scent of a living person in this house?” the figure asked. “There is none,” came the reply, and the figure left. A little later, another appeared, wearing a high cap and blue robes. After him came one in a high cap and white robes. Each asked the same question and received the same answer. As dawn approached, Wen climbed down into the hall and called out just as the figures had done. “Who was the one in yellow robes?” he asked. “Gold. It lies beneath the west wall of the hall.” “Who was the one in blue robes?” “Coins. They lie five paces from the well in front of the hall.” “Who was the one in white robes?” “Silver. It lies beneath the pillar at the northeastern corner of the wall.” “And who are you?” “I am a pestle. I am now beneath the stove.” When daylight came, Wen dug in each place in turn, finding five hundred jin of gold and silver and ten million strings of coins. He then took the pestle and burned it. From this he became immensely rich, and the house was peaceful ever after.
