A wolf came upon a lamb that had strayed from the flock. Rather than seize it by brute force, he wanted a plausible excuse for eating it. So he said to the lamb, “Last year you heaped insults on me.” The lamb cried out mournfully, “But I wasn’t even born then!” Then the wolf said, “You graze in my field.” The lamb replied, “I haven’t even tasted grass yet.” Again the wolf accused him: “You drink from my spring.” “I have never drunk water,” the lamb answered. “My mother’s milk is both my food and my drink.” The wolf seized and ate him, saying, “Well, I won’t go without my supper, even if you do refute every excuse I offer.” The fable shows that no argument, however true, can sway a wicked and greedy mind.
