The kingfisher is a solitary bird that spends its whole life at sea. It is said to nest on coastal crags to keep clear of human hunters. Once, when she was about to lay her eggs, a kingfisher came to a headland, and, seeing a rock above the sea, made her nest there. One day, while she was out seeking food, fierce winds whipped up the sea, and the waves rose as high as the nest, swamping it and killing her chicks. When the kingfisher returned and saw what had happened, she said, “Wretched creature that I am! I feared the land as treacherous and took refuge in the sea, only to find it far more faithless.” So too, some people, in guarding against their enemies, unwittingly fall into the hands of friends far more dangerous than their foes.
