Some thieves broke into a house and found nothing but a rooster, which they seized and carried off. As they were about to kill him, he begged them to let him go, saying that he was useful to people because he woke them in the night to go about their work. But they replied, “That is all the more reason for us to kill you: by waking them, you keep us from stealing.” The fable shows that what benefits honest people is most hateful to the wicked.
