One day in ancient Chao, the river suddenly rose, then soon returned to its former course. A giant fish weighing ten thousand catties was left in the harbor. It died after three days, and everyone in the commandery ate of it. One old woman alone refused. Suddenly an old man appeared and said, “This was my son. He had the misfortune to meet with this calamity. You alone did not eat his flesh, and I shall reward you generously. When the eyes of the stone tortoise at the eastern gate turn red, the city will sink.” The old woman went every day to look. A child, puzzled by her visits, asked her why, and she told him the truth. To trick her, the child smeared vermilion on the tortoise’s eyes. When the old woman saw them, she hurried out of the city. A boy dressed in blue appeared and said, “I am the dragon’s son.” He led her up a mountain, and the city sank and became a lake.
