Dai Wenmou of Pei Commandery lived in seclusion in the mountains of Yangcheng. Once, while eating in his guest hall, he suddenly heard a spirit call out, “I am an emissary of the Celestial Emperor. I wish to descend and lodge with you. May I?” Wenmou was greatly startled. The voice spoke again: “You doubt me.” Wenmou knelt and said, “My household is poor. I fear it is unworthy of your descent.” He then sprinkled and swept the hall, prepared a place for the spirit, and reverently presented food morning and evening. Later, he spoke of the matter privately in the inner room. His wife said, “I fear this is some demon or specter attaching itself to us.” Wenmou replied, “I have my doubts as well.” When the time came to offer the spirit food, it said, “I came to you intending to bring you good fortune. I never expected doubt and dissent.” As Wenmou was apologizing, a clamor suddenly arose in the hall, like dozens of people crying out. He went out to look and saw a great bird with plumage of five colors, followed by dozens of white doves. They flew northeast into the clouds and vanished, never to be seen again.
