He Chang was a native of Wu Commandery. From his youth he was devoted to the Way and its arts, and lived in seclusion. When a severe drought struck the region, leaving people and all living things withered and gaunt, the governor, Qing Hong, sent an officer of the household bureau to pay his respects, bearing a seal and ribbon of office and requesting that He Chang serve as acting magistrate of Wuxi. He Chang refused. After the officer withdrew, however, he sighed and said, “With calamity afflicting the commandery, how can I keep the Way to myself?” He then made the arduous journey to the county and lodged in Ming Xing’s house. The locusts and their young died away, and He Chang promptly slipped away into seclusion. Later, he was nominated as a Man of Rectitude and as an Erudite, but declined both honors. He died at home.
